The 2024 National Report Reveals a Growing Wave of Online Hate Affecting Young People
Youth European Society (YES) has published the 2024 national report on online hate and harmful discriminatory discourse, produced within the LIFE – Living Safely in a Digital World project. The findings reveal a notable rise in hate content targeting Roma communities, LGBTI+ individuals, religious minorities and women.
Facebook, news portals and TV formats remain major sources of harmful narratives, which quickly spread across social media platforms. Young people (15–29) are the most exposed group, reporting anger, anxiety and emotional burden caused by daily contact with hate speech.
The report highlights key cases, including antisemitic and xenophobic incidents, as well as discriminatory commentary in mainstream media. Despite actions taken by the Commission for Protection against Discrimination and the media regulator, enforcement remains inconsistent.
